Hermes Agent vs OpenClaw: Fundamental Differences Between Two Open-Source Agents
Summary
Hermes Agent and OpenClaw both combine models, tools, skills and persistent information. Compare their configured memory, learning, routing and operational behavior, rather than claiming one has no memory or can only use handwritten skills. Upstream capabilities and LightVela’s regional product controls are separate.
Separate model capability, agent runtime and hosting. A framework name does not prove that information was saved, a skill ran, or a tool was isolated. Use a reproducible task and a recorded version; unsupported vulnerability counts and efficiency multipliers do not establish a reliable comparison.
Capability comparison
| Dimension | Hermes Agent | OpenClaw |
|---|---|---|
| Persistent memory | USER.md, MEMORY.md and session archives; tool-based writes and retrieval | Memory files and retrieval tools; not merely two static files |
| Skills | SKILL.md; learning and maintenance depend on version and settings | Loads and creates SKILL.md; not restricted to handwritten skills |
| Tool isolation | Depends on runtime backend, mounts and permissions | Configurable sandbox; inspect the deployed state |
| Hosted controls | LightVela guides follow the current regional code and UI | Upstream docs are not LightVela’s web-menu inventory |
| Open standard | Compatible with agentskills.io | Distributed through the ClawHub marketplace |
Verify persistent memory
In Hermes, profile memory, agent notes, searchable session archives and the current prompt have different roles. A model saying “remembered”, a successful persistent write and recall in a later session are different outcomes. OpenClaw also provides memory retrieval; compare the configured behavior rather than file formats alone.
Test one non-sensitive fact: select the intended Bot, request a save, verify the entry on the Memory page, then start a new conversation and ask again. If the file was not updated, a spoken confirmation is insufficient. If the entry exists but is not recalled, check the selected Bot, memory settings and retrieval.
Skill creation and learning conditions
Both can use Markdown skills. Discovery, installation, reading instructions, execution and task success are separate stages. A SKILL.md file does not supply missing credentials, dependencies or tool permissions. Hermes review can create or maintain a skill when its conditions are met; it does not guarantee a new skill after every complex task or at a fixed tool-call count.
In LightVela, check Installed and run a task with a verifiable output. Built-in or protected skills may not be removable. Keep steps, inputs, failure handling and verification explicit.
Check permissions and isolation separately
Account authentication, tool approval, file access and container isolation are separate boundaries. Inspect the actual backend, writable mounts, network and tool capabilities; a working directory is not a universal containment guarantee. Both deployments require configuration review.
In LightVela, restoring Security turns tool approval and chat-action confirmation off. Read the confirmation before applying it. Advisory totals or an empty security page alone do not demonstrate that a particular version is safe.
What to verify in LightVela
LightVela hosts Hermes instances and exposes regional web controls. Select the intended Bot before checking its model, quota, memory, skills and channels. An upstream CLI, TUI, plugin or desktop feature is not automatically a LightVela web feature.
Web Chat does not require an external channel. Bot profiles can be separate while instance resources are shared. Files persist on the instance, but inference may send required context to the selected model provider. Availability enables configured work; it does not guarantee continuous learning while idle or remove backup needs.
Choose with representative tasks
Compare one cross-session memory test, one skill task, one channel delivery and recovery after a restart. Record versions, model settings, outputs, costs and failures. Choose the setup that meets your tasks, data and permission needs at an operational cost you can maintain.
